CROCHET HAT AND INFINITY SCARF

          CROCHET HAT & INFINITY SCARF

5.5mm hook
5 mm hook
darning needle
worsted weight yarn (like Caron Simply Soft)
Stitches used: single crochet (sc), half-double crochet (hdc) and chain (ch), slip stich (ss)

Special stitch: Blanket stitch to join rim. (Needle through outside loop of 1st st starting from outside and going inwards on one side. Then needle through the outside of the corresponding stitch on the other side. Do this for 5 stitches and pull tight to fasten. Make sure that you don't pull so hard it puckers. Even though the photo I uploaded shows the blanket stitch using the inside loop of the stitch, I have inserted arrows pointing to the outside of the stitch that I use.)

The hat is worked from the bottom up in rounds. Brim first. Before starting chain make sure you have a long tail about 10 inches. You will be using this later to join the sides of the brim.

5.5mm hook chain 21

Row 1: With 5 mm hook, sc in 2nd st from hook and in each sc across (20 sc), ch 1, turn (continue with 5mm hook from here on)

Row 2: sc in back loop of each stitch (20 sc in each row), ch 1, turn

Repeat row 2 until you have 64 ribs made. Pull a long loop of the yarn and drop your needle because you are now going to join the rib.

Sew rib 64 to rib 1 forming a circle and using the blanket stitch in each stitch with the long piece left at the start. Once this has been joined fold rib in half and line up the 64stitches. (It's up to you if you want to fold it one way or the other.)

Place 16 stitch markers evenly around the  rim. These are where you will add 16 extra stitches. SC in each corresponding stitch on both sides of the folded ring around, adding 16 extra stitches evenly to make the brim. After doing 80 sc around, join to 1st sc with ss. This is the joining round and does not count as round 1.

If using 2 colours start round one with 2nd colour.

Round 1: After ss joining together, pull the yarn up a bit and make a hdc in same stitch, *ch 1, skip 1 st, hdc in next st* repeat around until last st. ss to join.

Round 2: ss in next stitch and into next space. Pull up ss stich a bit and do hdc in starting st in row below of last round. Ch 1, skip hdc from last round, do hdc around ch from last round and into sc of row below.

Round 3: ss in next stitch and into next space. Pull up ss stitch a bit and hdc around ch of row below into hdc of stitch below, Ch 1, skip hdc of last round, hdc around ch 1 of last round and into hdc of row below.

Complete approximately 34 rounds using this method.

If you want to use 2 colours you can do final ss to join in new colour. I also bring the last colour behind my 1st stitch on next round before I drop it for later use. The starting stitches will move over by one on each round, you will notice. This is okay.

After 34 rounds are done, turn hat inside out and lay flat. Take a long strand of yarn (about 12 inches) and weave it under every 2nd space around. Pull the yarn tight to bring the edges together and finish off by weaving it through the inside of the hat to secure the yarn.

Turn hat back to right side out. You can add a pom-pom or any other kind of embellishment.

INFINITY SCARF

The infinity scarf is made of the moss stitch, only using hdc instead of sc. I started with 5.5mm and 140 chain. Switching colours in the same manner as described in the hat.
