Shoulder Shawl

SHOULDER SHAWL

Yarn required: 2 skeins Caron Simply Soft

Hook Size: 5mm (H or 8)

Stitches used: DC, chain, V-stitch using DC (DC, ch 1, DC)

Skill level: Intermediate to advanced

I apologize in advance for the quality of the garment in the photos. I made it a long time ago and it gets well-worn each winter. All of the others I have made have been donated to charity.

Even though it appears to be a light and airy shoulder shawl it is quite warm and does use up the better part of 2 skeins.

PATTERN START:

Chain 90 plus 2, turn

Row 1: sc in 3rd stitch and in each chain across, ch 1, turn

Round 2 to 7: repeat round 1, except on round 7 ch 4 (counts as 1st dc and sc on next round) before turn.

Note: (You might like to place stitch markers at each shoulder start and finish on this next round and carry them forward as you work.)

Row 8: DC, ch 1 in next 18 sts (total of 19 DC including ch 3 start), V-stitch in next stitch (start of shoulder), DC, ch 1 in next 5 sts, V-stitch in next st (end of shoulder), DC, ch 1 in next 37 sts, V-stitch in next st (start of 2nd shoulder), DC, ch 1 in next 5, V-stitch in next st (end of next shoulder), DC,ch 1 in next 20 sts finishing with a DC in last stitch, ch 4, turn (90 + 4 inc= 94 sts)

One side will always have 19 DC before shoulder and the other side will be 20 DC before shoulder. It doesn't show in the end, and you can change this if you like. I am writing this pattern from the first one I made.

Here is a template to show the shoulder increase over row 8 to row 13.

After round 13 the pattern is DC, ch 1, DC in next DC to end. Make sure to DC in turning ch 4 at the end of each row. Repeat until total of 30 rows are made (including 7 at beginning).

Edging: Without finishing yarn from row 30, ch 5, turn, *SC in next DC, ch 5*, SC in next DC. Finish off.

Strings at neck: Pick up a stitch at the beginning of the neck and chain 40 plus 1, sc in 2nd sc from hook and 39 sts back to the neck. Total 40 sc. Finish off.
