CAT MAT #2

A great way to use up excess yarn, especially the ugly stuff you might not like. Some mats might be pretty, some might be ugly, but all will be surprisingly spongy and a perfect cat magnet.

The brick stitch pattern uses up a lot of yarn and does call for more work than usual, but it is worth it in the end.

Supplies needed are: 5mm/I/9 hook

Any worsted weight yarn

Stitches used are double crochet, chain stitch and single crochet

There are many tutorials on how to make the brick stitch so I won't describe it here.

Make the pad 17 bricks by 25 bricks. Make 2 pads. Finish off the loose ends before joining them together.

FOR DOG MAT: Make mat 33 x 33 bricks.

Line up the corner of the 2 mats. Using a hanging single crochet do 1 sc, ch3, 1 sc in corner.

3 ch, and sc between the next 2 bricks until the end. In next corner do 1sc, ch 3, 1sc. finish off yarn at the end.

In corner ch 3 space make 10 DC, *ss in next ch 3 space, 7 dc in next ch 3*, repeat until next corner.

In corner make 10 DC and repeat above pattern.

Finish off.

Mat measures about 20 inches by 13 inches.

Shoulder Shawl

SHOULDER SHAWL Yarn required: 2 skeins Caron Simply Soft Hook Size: 5mm (H or 8) Stitches used: DC, chain, V-stitch using DC (DC, ch 1, DC)  Skill level: Intermediate to advanced I apologize in advance for the quality of the garment in the photos. I made it a long time ago and it gets well-worn each winter. All of the others I have made have been donated to charity. Even though it appears to be a light and airy shoulder shawl it is quite warm and does use up the better part of 2 skeins. PATTERN START: Chain 90 plus 2, turn Row 1: sc in 3rd stitch and in each chain across, ch 1, turn Round 2 to 7: repeat round 1, except on round 7 ch 4 (counts as 1st dc and sc on next round) before turn. Note: (You might like to place stitch markers at each shoulder start and finish on this next round and carry them forward as you work.) CAT MAT #3 I am making a granny square using a 2 half-double crochet cluster (HDC) instead of 3 double crochet. The shell stich is also made with HDC instead of DC. The finished mat is around 19" x 13" Supplies needed are: 5mm/I/9 hook Any worsted weight yarn Stitches used are half-double crochet, standing HDC, standing single crochet, single crochet and chain stitch.  There are many tutorials on how to make the HDC and the Standing Stitch, so I won't describe it here. Make the pad 20 rounds if using a thin yarn like Caron Simply Soft, or 18 rounds using a thicker yarn. Make 2 pads. Finish off the loose ends before joining them together.
