I spent a great deal of time trying to find the exact pattern for the motif on-line to no avail.

The pattern that can be substituted with only a minor change is called Maybelle and can be found at this link:

The only difference in the motif pattern is that there are 8 DC in each loop on the last round, not 7 as is called for in the pattern.

As with most of my patterns, I learned far too late to write these things down, and I am sitting here with the shawl on my lap trying to remember back to 2015 when I first made this shawl.

Here is a photo of the shawl I made:

The lay out is like this:

11 motifs
9 motifs
7 motifs
5 motifs
3 motifs
1 motif
Total = 36 motifs

The motifs lay directly under each other and are not staggered.

Join each motif to the one next to it by doing a ss between the 4th and 5th dc on the final round of the motif. So, it's 4 DC, SS to 5th DC on other motif, 4 DC in motif you are working on. Do this only 2 times to connect 2 petals only.

I strongly recommend finishing each one as you go along. Nothing is worse than finishing off all strands at the end of a project!

You will notice big spaces between the motifs when this stage has been completed.

I made the pinwheel pattern in the spaces in the following manner:

Round 1: Attach yarn to any available loop in space with a standing SC, *CH 3, SC in next available loop*, repeat until the all loops have a single crochet and join to the starting SC with a SS. (There should be 8 CH 3 spaces.)

Round 2: SS to centre CH of CH 3 (this should be CH2), CH 3, *DC in next 7 loops, join with SS to top of CH 3, finish off.

This can be a bit tedious but the effect is rather nice in the end.

On the outside edges of the shawl I did the following: Join yarn to centre of 1st available centre stitch on last petal with a standing SC, Ch 5, SC in centre available stitch on side of next petal, CH 5, SC in centre available stitch on side of next petal, CH 5, SC in available stitch on side of next petal, CH 5, SC in next available stitch on side of next petal. (There should be 4 CH-5 loops)

The last loop is finished as CH 3, DTR in next petal on next flower (and marked in blue in photo):

I am going from memory here because I made this a few years ago, but I seem to recall that I did CH 3 3-TR joined in next 3 loops (as shown in 2nd, 3rd and 4th loops above), pull through all loops, CH 3, SC in next SC.

To make the border around the outside of the shawl I did the following:

Attach the yarn to any stitch on any motif with a standing SC. SC in each stitch around, in centre stitch of outside petal do SC, CH 3, SC to create a faux picot.

When you reach a join between two motifs do the following: SC in last available stitch in 1st motif, CH 3, skip joining stitch, SC in next stitch on next motif.
