Ear Flap Hat Variations

Here are some of the variations I made from this fabulous and versatile pattern provided by Micah Makes Crochet. You can crank out different sizes for donations, as I do, with very little time and yarn.

Sizes shown below are toddler in the first 3 and child in the purple one.

This pattern calls for expert or advanced knowledge of design as it is organic and changes with the size of each dog. The first template being shown is made for a slightly chubby but very adorable little Berna-doodle named Ivy. There is a slit in the back for those who use halters instead of collars when walking your dog. You can make it without the slit if you just use a collar. Yarn required: worsted weight less than a skein per colour. Shown in photo using Red Heart Comfort yarn - 16 oz - 867 yard balls. No dye lot in pink. Also, Red Heart Comfort variegated yarn - 12 oz - 646 yard balls. I'm pretty sure you would use less than a Red Heart Super Saver Big ball of yarn. Hook size: Even though the yarn mentioned above called for a 5.5mm hook, I used a 5mm hook. Stitches used: SC for body, SC in back loop for collar, DC for legs and skirt frill. Shoulder Shawl

SHOULDER SHAWL Yarn required: 2 skeins Caron Simply Soft Hook Size: 5mm (H or 8) Stitches used: DC, chain, V-stitch using DC (DC, ch 1, DC)  Skill level: Intermediate to advanced I apologize in advance for the quality of the garment in the photos. I made it a long time ago and it gets well-worn each winter. All of the others I have made have been donated to charity. Even though it appears to be a light and airy shoulder shawl it is quite warm and does use up the better part of 2 skeins. PATTERN START: Chain 90 plus 2, turn Row 1: sc in 3rd stitch and in each chain across, ch 1, turn Round 2 to 7: repeat round 1, except on round 7 ch 4 (counts as 1st dc and sc on next round) before turn. Note: (You might like to place stitch markers at each shoulder start and finish on this next round and carry them forward as you work.) Row 8: DC, ch 1 in next 18 sts (total of 19 DC including ch 3 start), V-stitch in next stitch (start of shoulder)

  A great way to use up excess yarn, especially the ugly stuff you might not like. Some mats might be pretty, some might be ugly, but all will be surprisingly spongy and a perfect cat magnet. CAT MAT #3 I am making a granny square using a 2 half-double crochet cluster (HDC) instead of 3 double crochet. The shell stich is also made with HDC instead of DC. The finished mat is around 19" x 13" Supplies needed are: 5mm/I/9 hook Any worsted weight yarn Stitches used are half-double crochet, standing HDC, standing single crochet, single crochet and chain stitch.  There are many tutorials on how to make the HDC and the Standing Stitch, so I won't describe it here. Make the pad 20 rounds if using a thin yarn like Caron Simply Soft, or 18 rounds using a thicker yarn. Make 2 pads. Finish off the loose ends before joining them together.
