Fancy Free Hexagonal Flower Motif Afghan

Fancy Free Hexagonal Flower Afghan

Skill level: Easy to intermediate

Hook size: 5mm (H)

Yarn: Worsted Weight

Quantity of yarn:
Can use scrap yarn for the centre and choose your own border. The example shown used Simply Soft Caron Yarn in neon colours and would be less than a skein of each colour.

The border main colour was made in white low cost bulk yarn and could probably be less than 2 big Bernat Super Value Yarn in 426 yard skeins.

My apologies for the quality of some photos.

PATTERN START:

Make magic circle with your choice of beginning Simply Soft Yarn as shown.

Round 1: Into circle, ch 3 and dc (makes first 2 dc cluster), *ch 3, 2dc* repeat 4 more times, ch 3, ss to first ch 3 (total 6 2-dc clusters and 6 ch 3 spaces), finish off.

Round 2: With next colour standing sc in any ch 3 space and make 6 more sc in same space, 7sc in each space around. (Total stitches should be 6 x 7 = 42 sc) finish off.

Round 3: Attach border main colour with standing SC to centre sc in any 7 sc of previous round, *ch 6 and sc in centre sc in next 7 sc*. repeat until last one, ss into first sc of round. DO NOT FINISH OFF YARN

Round 4: Ch 3 (counts as first DC), *in ch 6 space make 4DC, ch 2, 4DC, DC in next sc*, repeat around, ss into first DC. Finish off. (Total 9 DC in each space between sc's )

I recommend finishing off all the loose yarn in each motif as your finish each motif. Nothing is worse than doing this over a 100 times when you have finished making all your motifs! When finishing off your motifs, pull the magic circle closed tightly before sewing in yarn strands.

Lay out as many motifs as you want. (I can't remember exactly how many I made but it was probably about 11 rows of 11 and 10 rows of 10 = 221 motifs) I could be wrong, though. Make as may or as few as you like. Here is an example of the pattern layout using columns of 6 and 5.
Use whatever stitch you want to join the motifs. I used a whip stitch.

Here are photos of the finished product.

I'd love to hear back from anyone with comments.
