Crocheted Cat Mat
CROCHETED CAT MAT
This mat is made for my local Humane Society and even made it their Facebook page. It is a popular item for the stray cats and can go home with each animal when they are adopted. It ends up measuring 12" x 16", but can vary depending on the size of the yarn.
Yarn: Leftover worsted weight - any quantity
Hook Size: 5mm (H)
Skill level: Easy to intermediate
Special stitches: 3 DC cluster (YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through two loops, YO, draw up another loop, YO, draw through 2 loops. YO, pull through 4 remaining loops on hook, ch1)
Special notes: There is always only be 1 ch between clusters, except in corners where there will be 2 ch or 3 ch depending on whether you are using Round 2 or Round 3 template. (This is an economical and easy way to make a puffy and tight pattern to keep cats comfortable and warm. It is a hit with mine as well as the shelter cats as shown in the last photo.)
Pattern:
Ch 14 plus 3 (equals starting DC)
Round 1: Do 2 DC cluster in 4th stitch from hook (last ch 3 from start equals 1st DC), *ch 1, skip 1 ch, 3DC cluster in next stitch*. Repeat to end. There should be 7 DC clusters on one side, ch 3, in last stitch make 3 DC cluster and ch 3. On other side of chain make 3DC clusters in corresponding stitch to clusters on starting side, ch 1 between, after 7th one is made ch 3, in starting stitch do 3DC cluster, ch 3, ss to starting DC) There should be 7 3-DC clusters on each side and 1 3-DC cluster in each end. Total 16 3-DC clusters.
Round 2: ss to space, ch3 and 2-DC cluster in same stitch, **(ch 1, 3-DC cluster in next space) repeat ( to ) end. In corner chain 2 do 3-DC cluster, ch 2, 3-DC cluster, ch 2 and 3-DC cluster**, repeat ** to ** 3 times.
Round 3: Repeat Round 2, except in corner Ch 2 spaces make DC cluster, ch 1, DC cluster, ch 2, in next corner ch 2 space make DC cluster, ch 1, DC cluster. Between corner spaces make DC clusters and ch 1 as many times as needed. (See photo for details) Continue with round 2 pattern.
Repeat Round 2 and 3 until desires size. I make 10 rounds or 11 rounds.
