Pretty in pastel afghan pattern

The motifs can be laid out in a diamond pattern or a square pattern. The example shown above is in a square pattern. Worsted weight yarn with 5mm (H) crochet hook.

Each motif: (This pattern can be adapted as you like if you find this doesn't quite work for you. This is more of a guideline than a pattern. The following is how I recall making it.)

The colours I used were a variegated yarn for centre circle, lavender for square outside, and pastel yellow for outside trim.

Round 1: Make a magic circle (or chain 3) In circle make ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 11 dc, ss to join to 1st ch 3. (12 dc total) (Remember to pull the circle tight so there is very little hole in the centre.)

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) and dc in same space, dc in each st around (total 24 sts)

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) and dc in same space, dc in next st, then *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts* until end of round, ss to 1st ch 3 to join. (36sts total) fasten off.

Round 4: (add new colour) by connecting to any st and ch 4 (counts as 1st tr). Then in next st do 1dc, next st 1 hdc, in next 3 st do 2 sc, then next st do 1 hdc, next st do 1 dc, next st to 1 trc, then ch 4, then repeat pattern of *1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr, ch 4* in next 9 sts. repeat 2 more times. (total of 36 sts and 4 ch 4 spaces for corners.) finish off.

Round 5: (add new colour) by standing sc or ch 1 to any last tr in repeat on previous round. Then *4 sc, in ch 4 sp, then sc in all 9 sts across*. repeat 3 more times until last repeat. In last repeat you don't do last sc but connect to join. (There should be total of 52 stitches all the way around = 9 each side x 4 sides and 4 st in corners x 4= 36 + 16 = 52 sts.)

Make as many motifs as you like. Once you have decided on a lay out, join them by whip stitching together, leaving 2 sc in each corner open. This is what gives it that open look when it is finished. You are stitching together only 11 of each side (9 sts plus 1 in each corner.)

Then do a border of DC all the way around the outside to balance to the last colour in each motif.
